Gods, Protectors, Spirit, Angels and Demons

MuZom Mung (No Gender) This Mung attacks rarely, in its attack, they are swift and sudden.(e.g. when a person falls ill suddenly, it is said that MuZom Mung has interfered or attacked). It is said that when the time is coming (death/aayu) for anyone and if they happen to be far away from their protective forces, (away from home) MuZom Mung attacks that person, especially during DUSK time. It is said that they are the most active during this time. They are said to be residing in “CHORTEN MENDONG” (STUPAS-where all the belongings and leftover of the dead is put) When one is attacked by MuZom, A boongthing or Mun will burn tea leaves+butter+incense and appease the MuZom Mung. ([Chiya]CHYO SURR)

Sohor Mung (FEMALE)
This demon attacks pregnant females in the village. It also attacks pregnant cattle in the village. They are believed to be less powerful and a simple (SURR FAT) prayer would drive them away. According to the story in LINGDEM, many many years ago a Tibetan lady came from TIBET to Lingdem and settled there. She came with lots of PHIRU & ZEEUS, she started business there and started serving alcohol there. All the men of the village started flocking there all the time. This really bothered the ladies of the village and all of them met one day and conspired to kill this Tibetan lady. One day they go together and killed her, it is said that her spirit hid in the big stones and trees especially SEETH KUNG (dhudeelo ruk) She attacks pregnant ladies and cattle to avenge this.

Imbong Mung
This spirit only attacks small children. The small children fall ill because of this (usually loosies) This spirit cries like a baby in the distance.

Heekup Mung
They look like chicks (challa) and are said to be the messenger for SINGZEE PUNU (SingZee is the head of all demons ‘YAMRAZ’ He is perhaps the decider, the person who judges everything when a human dies, it is up to him to decide where the humans soul will go ) They like to take gossips from the earth world to Yamraz. The humans therefore very regularly bang their ‘pyangs’ (cerelac tins to measure grains) to give a false indication that they are having a difficult time, their tins are empty and they do not have enough to eat. This way Heekup Mung would inform SINGZEE that the humans are suffering and that there is no point in making more efforts to torture them.

Leekyoe Mung
They attack cats and eat them. They look like wild cats, it is said that when ‘koiralo’ cries its bad luck (Namtok). When this cry is heard, it is said that some human is going to die.

Roloh Mung
Whenever a death occurs in the family, This spirit latches itself on the dead and makes them alive and they walk around like zombies eating the people around. (In olden times, the houses were very far away from each other, esp. when the death occurred during night, the spirit would attack and the dead would suddenly wake up and start attacking the family members around. Apparently they cannot bend so they are very stiff. It is said that the family members should hit the dead person with TALING (Dhaan Kutnee-Musli in Nepali) or any everyday use objects) They instantly die again. If that fails the family members should hide themselves under the house TANGHAP, since the dead body cannot bend it is unable to reach ‘tanghap’. His/her head hits the post and falls flat, the spirit leaves at sunrise.

Sungku Fo
It is said that one should not tease with sungku fo, This bird chirps just before sunset, in the jungles with a ‘kooo kooo’ sound, apparently its quite tempting to make that sound when you hear it, one should not do that esp kids, they fall ill after reaching home. A simple surr faat will get rid of this problem. The bird is black in colour and is as big as an owl (Koilee in Nepali). It also looks like Kokoli (nepali) bird.

Mulon Mung (Lyam Lyamay) (male & female)
If the female MU LON meets a male human, she (phakayay ra) through her sweet words and buttery words (praises) puts the man under her spell and takes him home. (I think the man needs to be gifted to be selected) Apparantly the MuLon teaches the man all the tricks and the trade of boongthings, padim and YABA (In Subba) {YABA is apparently quite high in the heirchy, they are definitely higher than YAMA}. Similarly if the male MuLon meets a gifted female human, he takes her home (Buttery words and lots of praises) and teaches her all the tricks and trade of Mun or YAMA (Subba) {Apparantly all the Jakris also go through the same ordeal} When these guys return from the training, the MuLons give them equipments and tools needed for the trade. (Damuru,Tangdar, etc). In the present day, interested people watch and learn from older boongthings/padims/muns, they take training from them and learn the tricks and trade. They are either interested to learn or some feel it from inside (dreams, deuta charnu). However if one happens to encounter a MuLon and they do not recognize it, they kill you instantly.

Baamu Mung

Sue-mu Mung (always female)

Duet Mung

Jamfi Mung- Jamfi Mung could be both male and female. Once a year “Jamfi” goes down to the Rungnue (Teesta) to drink water. They usually scream on their way back! (Why?)
They live in the most harsh terrain of the alpine region (Lake area- this is not the actual lake (water body), it means high up in the mountains)
The meeting between a Jamfi and a human is very rare, but if the male Jamfi meets a male human, he kills the man by tearing him apart. Same is expected when a female Jamfi meets a female human. However, (rarely) if a female Jamfi meets a male human, the Jamfi might fall for the man, they might fall in love. In this case the human comes under her spell and he would be taken to her home high up in the mountains where he would live with her and never go back to his normal human life. Same could happen if a male Jamfi meets a female human. (male Jamfi meeting a female human is almost non existent)
The story of “KUMZER THING” is a good example of Jamfi human encounter.
